University of Michigan - Ann Arbor COMMENTS
CCTV
Huge Greek system, huge student body, tons of majors, zillions of clubs. UM is the powerhouse of the Midwest and recognized among the top 25 schools in the country. Students proudly put on a uniform for the wolverines, play IMA sports, or pack out the gym. Besides being infused with jocks, the student body can count on being academically challenged by the numerous outstanding faculty members. Though diverse, students are very cliquish and elitist. Overall everything about this university affirms their clout.

On February 12th, Forbes came out with a list of the "Top College Sports Towns" in the nation. The list which included many of the major sports markets one would think of, including a few under the radar colleges. The list is as follows: 10. University of Indiana, Bloomington, IN 9. University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 8. University of Missouri, Columbia, MO 7. University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC 6. University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Ark. 5. University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 4. Penn State University, State College, PA 3. University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI 2. Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA 1. If you're looking for somewhere reasonably priced to eat, with good food, look no further than South U or Kerrytown's No Thai! This is one of my all-time favorite places to eat on campus...my friends and I always joke about how we could write a five-page essay about this place. No Thai is one of the most enjoyable places to eat on campus. And pre-recession, you could get 2 nights worth of dinner for $8. Now it's more of a $10 endeavor, but it's well worth it. There are a number of different things on the menu, including different kinds of noodles, many different combinations of vegetable stir fry, fried rice, sweet and spicy chicken, and a few appetizers/side dishes. But with the amount of food they give you, you won't be needing anything else. You also get to choose a protein (chicken, beef, shrimp, tofu), and a spice level: no spice, weak, medium, yoga flame, and dim mak- the death touch. I am a spicy food lover and I have yet to venture past medium, although I plan to try yoga flame in the fall. The food comes out fast, and it's always delicious. I used to go once a week with my friends, until the freshman fifteen and the sophomore hundred and fifteen kicked in. There are two problems with no thai: 1. They don't deliver. 2. At the South U location, unless you're an expert like I am, it is near impossible to get a table in the tiny restaurant at a reasonable dinner hour. But aside from that, this might be my favorite place to eat on campus. Unfortunately it is enough calories to cover a week's worth of food, so word of advice: go during orientation or welcome week, while you're still thin.

For the freshmen, and even the rest of the University, registration is a stressful time. Unfortunately for the freshmen, who have already gone to orientation or will be going within the next 7 or so weeks, by the time they go to the fishbowl to register for classes, many are already full, since the rest of us registered in April. But, do not worry if you do not get the classes you want right off the bat. I almost never know my schedule until after classes have already begun. A few tips with registering for classes. 1. A wait list does NOT mean you are not in the class. I have registered for many classes and been on the wait list and still gotten in. If you show up for the first day of class, you will likely get a spot. 2. However, a wait list position does not mean you are definitely in the class, have a backup plan! 4. GET YOUR NATURAL SCIENCE CREDITS OUT OF THE WAY! You do not want to be the senior in AnthrBio 161 because he hasn't taken all of his LSA credits. 5. Take English 125 first semester. If you can't take 124. If you can't take that, find another way to fulfill your first year writing requirement first semester. You'll regret it if you don't. 6. 12 credits is way too few, 18 is excessive for your first semester ever. Take between 14 and 16 credits. 7. Stats 350 is a mistake, but if you HAVE to take it, get that out of the way first or second semester. 8. Keep checking wolverine access throughout the summer- you may find that a class has opened up or find a really interesting class you hadn't seen before! I think that's all.....if I think of anything else I'll post..good luck!

I'm talking, of course, about Splash Bash. You know welcome week is coming closer when you get the facebook invite to AEPi's big welcome week party. It happens the last night that people get to really party hard, the Sunday before the first day of classes. Hundreds of Michigan greek life members pack The Necto for one of the two times during the year when it is actually fun to go there. All throughout welcome week, AEPi sells t-shirts and tickets to their party. It costs about 15 dollars and you need a ticket and t-shirt to get in. Before splash bash the girls use scissors to turn the once t-shit into lingerie or a dress of come sort- the more naked, the better, and the guys just wear them as they are. The line usually gets long so you should try to get there as early as possible, but of course without being the first one there. At random intervals throughout the night, the boys of AEPi run around with hundreds of water bottles filled with watered-down paint. The paint gets all over your hair and clothes, so make sure to dress in stuff you don't mind ruining or losing!- cotton shorts, flip flops, etc. And don't expect to have a functioning cell phone for more than ten minutes. I run into at least ten people I know at the verizon store the next day every year because of all the water damage. Necto is also pretty hard on ids, so unless you have a good one pregaming hard is a good idea. At least the money goes to charity. That should make you feel a little bit better about attending what is really just a glorified wet t-shirt contest...
The Prudent Student (October 7, 2009)
One of the biggest problems I faced while living in the dorms freshman year was lugging heavy 24 packs of bottled water from the trunk of someone's car to my room. But this year, with the addition of H2GoBlue to our campus, this no longer has to be a problem! A few friends of mine started a water company with the already existing bottled water company Absopure to create an eco-friendly, wallet friendly water service with free delivery. All you have to do is go to their website, press a few buttons, and voila- you have a free delivery of water right to your door every single week! For people who live in apartments or houses, they have coolers of water to fill your glasses, and for those of you in the dorms they of course also carry 24 packs of water- what you want delivered is up to you. I definitely recommend this service for all of your hydration needs!

Saturday in Ann Arbor is better then a lifetime?s worth of free beer and pizza.
neidnerjim (August 31, 2009)
Best combination of a fine education and amazing school spirit anywhere.
ldanzig (August 31, 2009)
School spirit and parties are definitely not lacking here in Ann Arbor.
rusyn (August 31, 2009)
I agree with all of these comments. The snow does get bad. Sometimes the same snow falls and doesn't go anywhere until it finally metls for good in the spring. But that is not a problem for anyone at this school.
tvads2009 (August 31, 2009)
The snow and cold don't stop the sick partying scene at bars, frat houses, apartments, everywhere.
